Auditions for: Dr. Seuss’s The Cat in the Hat (non-musical)
Director: Betsy Bisson
Performance Dates: March 4-13, March 8, 9, 10 & 11 weekday school shows-please be certain you can miss school/work for 4 mornings – 9:45am & 11:45am!
Ages: for this production, we are looking for vaccinated 4th grade through adults.
Style: This production of The Cat in the Hat follows the actual text of the book as the script. For that reason, auditionees should be able to move well. The style of the production will also follow the style of the book: a very choreographed style of physical comedy. The audition will be a series of explorations in that style. This is NOT an audition where previously rehearsed monologues or songs will be presented. So come ready to move, ready to explore and experiment, and ready to be in the world created by Dr. Seuss.
Only the Cat, The Fish, The Boy & The Girl have lines, but there are also the three Characters in Black, who don’t have lines, but have a great deal of onstage time, as well as Thing 1 & Thing 2, (2 lines each plus they laugh and squeal a lot) – gymnastics/acrobatics training highly recommended.
Audition date (Callbacks to follow that evening): Tuesday, November 30th at 6pm, appointment required. Callbacks will begin at 7:15pm.
Preparation: Auditionees should come in face masks from home as well as clothing that allows very free movement (stretchy pants and shirts that are not too loose so physicality can be seen, hair should be tied back and no jewelry should be worn, simple jazz shoes/athletic shoes are fine, but socks alone are too slippery).
Auditionees will be taught a series of mime-like activities to demonstrate clarity of physical expression. Those auditioning for Thing 1 & 2, should warm up to safely demonstrate acrobatics that they can easily do on a stage floor (we do NOT have gymnastic mats). Everyone must also bring a non-returnable photo.
Casting Announced: Friday, December 3rd.
Rehearsal schedule: Rehearsals will range from January 4th-March 3rd. Rehearsals will be held Sunday-Thursday evenings, though not everyone will be called to every rehearsal. Orientation for cast and parents of cast will be Monday, December 6th from 6:30-8pm, but then no further rehearsals till January.
Questions: Call Vanessa at 864.235.2885 ext 100.

**We are also looking for 2 Production Assistants (PAs) to run sound for the rehearsals and performances. It is a very complex sound design (Voice Overs of the Narrator’s lines as well as a vast quantity of sound effects/music that must be timed precisely to the action) and the PAs will be a significant part of the success of this production. Please be certain that you are available for all performances as well as rehearsals from February 1st – March 3rd. Please email [email protected] to find out more.**
