Matt joined South Carolina Children’s Theatre full-time in March 2020 and serves the organization as Artistic Director, responsible for the artistic leadership of the theatre. He first worked with SCCT in 2007, playing Lumiere in the inaugural production of Disney’s Beauty and the Beast. Since then, Matt has collaborated with SCCT as a director, actor, music director, and teacher. His recent SCCT directing credits include Robin Hood, The Sound of Music, Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella, and Disney and Cameron Mackintosh’s Mary Poppins.
Prior to joining SCCT, Matt was the General Manager at Children’s Theatre Company in Minneapolis, the nation’s leading theatre for multigenerational audiences. He oversaw a vast array of company operations and commissioned nationally recognized artists and playwrights to create groundbreaking work for audiences of all ages.
He also previously served as Associate Producing Director at Seattle Repertory Theatre. While at the Rep, Matt worked on the world premiere, pre-Broadway production of Come From Away, as well as the first regional production of David Byrne’s musical, Here Lies Love. He also served as the Artistic Producer of Seattle Rep’s Public Works, produced in partnership with The Public Theater and many local community partners.
An accomplished director, Matt’s 2015 production of Into the Woods was honored with a Seattle Gregory Award for Best Musical. His work has been seen at Seattle Children’s Theatre, Village Theatre, and many more. Other directing highlights include: Shrek, Rent, and Ragtime at Seattle Children’s Theatre; Peter and the Starcatcher at Coeur d’Alene Summer Theatre; and The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee at Seattle Musical Theatre. He is a proud Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Wofford College.
Matt has presented on numerous national and local panels. He has been a guest lecturer and speaker at colleges, universities, and high schools. Matt is a believer that culture is a birthright and that art belongs to all, and he is honored to collaborate with the staff, board, artists, and volunteers at SCCT to ensure that every young person and family in the Upstate has access to transformative theatre experiences.
