Audition Call: Once on This Island

From the Tony Award-winning songwriting team of Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty (Seussical, Ragtime), comes the Olivier Award-winning Once on This Island. This highly original and theatrical Caribbean adaptation of the popular fairy tale, The Little Mermaid, tells the story of one small girl who finds love in a world of prejudice.

Audition date: Friday, October 14th from 12 PM-2:30 PM and Saturday, October 15th from 12 PM-2:30 PM, by appointment only. If you cannot do in-person auditions, you may submit a Video Audition due Friday, October 14th, by midnight.

  • To participate in any SCCT production, for your safety, COVID-19 vaccinations are strongly encouraged but not required.
  • All actors will perform unmasked.
  • We reserve the right to require testing at any point during the rehearsals/performances, given that actors will be in close contact with one another.

Performance Dates:
May 5 – 7, May 12 – 14, May 19 – 21

SCCT will provide a stipend to all adult actors (18 and up who are out of high school). The stipend will break down as follows:

  • $150 for the rehearsal process
  • $100 for each performance weekend
  • Additional $50 lumpsum for school matinee performances

Ages: for this production, we are looking for 5th grade through adults.

Style: All roles sing and must move well.

Audition date: Friday, October 14th from 6 PM – 9 PM and Saturday, October 15th from 12 PM – 5:00 PM, by appointment only. If you cannot do in-person auditions, you may submit a Video Audition due Friday, October 14th, by midnight.

Callbacks: Sunday, October 16th from 6:00 PM-9:30 PM (readings from the script, singing songs from the score, and a dance call)

Preparation: Auditionees should prepare 16 measures of a memorized song from a musical. You must bring sheet music in the correct key. No one will be allowed to sing a capella. You must also bring a non-returnable photo.

Rehearsal schedule: Rehearsals will begin in early/mid-March through May 4.

The role of TI MOUNE has been cast.

DANIEL—late teens – mid 20s, B2-F4. Character is a mix of African and French descent. A member of the ruling class, torn between duty and love.

AGWE—Vocal range B2-G4. God of the Sea. Strong and vibrant, enjoys mischief.

ASAKA—Vocal range E3-E5. Mother of the Earth. Fiery and filled with warmth.

ERZULIE—Vocal range A3-E5. Goddess of Love. Passionate and kind.

PAPA GE—Vocal range B2-G4. Demon of Death. Sly, mysterious, and full of wonder.

MAMA EURALIE—Vocal range G3-C5. Ti Moune’s adoptive mother. Embodiment of maternal love.

TONTON JULIAN—Vocal range A2-E4. Ti Moune’s adoptive father. Gentle, embodiment of paternal love.

ANDREA—late teens – mid 20s, vocal range B3-D5. Daniel’s betrothed. A product of her environment, standoffish.

ARMAND—Strong, bold.

STORYTELLERS—Multiple. Strong singers. Bold, expressive actors.
