TEST DRIVE: Exploration and Story Drama

Monday | March 1 | 4:00-5:00 PM | Lauren Wilson | FREE

Wonder if your child will enjoy theatre class? Want to try it out before committing to a 10-week semester? These classes are perfect for you!

A chance to meet our instructors, see the classrooms and try out a sample class. Students should come in clothes that allow for free movement—skirts can be tricky for movement games. While the students are in their sample class, our Principal Teaching artist will talk with parents of the class goals and benefits as well as covering everything SCCT has to offer for your child. These classes are extremely popular and fill-up quickly, so please sign-up only if you really plan to come. Students that enroll after the test drive will receive the early enrollment discount.

Exploration | Ages 3-5

Mondays | March 8-May 17 | 4:00-5:00 PM | Lauren Wilson | $155
Wednesdays | March 10-May 19 | 3:00-4:00 PM | Lauren Wilson | $155

Channel your child’s endless creative energy into directed dramatic play! Games, stories, music and poetry inspire character exploration, teamwork and imagination. This low-pressure environment will ease a child into comfortably being in front of people and expressing ideas to a group.

Some theatre exercises and activities are used each session, but teachers are sensitive to the needs of returning students, so these classes are appropriate to take several times in order to further hone developing skills.

Story Drama | Ages 3-5

Tuesdays | March 9-May 18 | 4:00-5:00 PM | Mia Phillips | $155

Great preparation for literacy and problem solving, this class allows the students to explore themes, characters and environments of a different children’s book each week. Students act-out and perform creatively through the world of the book, but the focus is more on understanding the parts of the book and overcoming obstacles creatively within a group rather than in simple individual performance.

Fantastic for group interaction and socialization while keeping students engaged at solving the conflict presented in the literature. Students begin to learn literary concepts and are called upon to summarize (in group discussion) the main idea and details from the source material. They will explore the central idea, narration, distinguish between fact and opinion, use of repetition, dialogue, imagery and how pictures support the text and give us clues to words, then draw conclusions for solving the problem.  Great fun and great foundation work for reading!

Some theatre exercises and activities are used each session, but teachers are sensitive to the needs of returning students, so these classes are appropriate to take several times to further hone developing skills.

Sing!: Disney | Ages K5-3rd Grade

Mondays | March 8-May 17 | 5:15-6:15 PM | Lauren Wilson | $155
Wednesdays | March 10-May 19 | 5:30-6:30 PM | Lauren Wilson | $155

Group musical theatre training for performance—you don’t have to read music, but should enjoy singing and moving. The class will focus on ensemble musical theatre material from favorite Disney movies!

Don’t worry if your child doesn’t already know songs, we’ll teach them and they get to learn new favorites! Some theatre exercises and activities are used each session, but teachers are sensitive to the needs of returning students, so these classes are appropriate to take several times in order to further hone developing skills.

Workday Workshop* | Ages K4-5th Grade

Monday | February 15 | Presidents’ Day | 8:30 AM-3:00 PM | $50
Friday | March 19 | Teacher Workday | 8:30 AM-3:00 PM | $50

So…Mom and Dad don’t have a break even though your school does. Come to SCCT and play with us!

Games and activities are designed to keep students engaged and entertained with exercises used in our regular session classes, exploring group problem solving, being seen and heard in front of an audience, areas of the stage, and character development. This workshop is meant to engage the child in a group environment, but also to allow the parent some guilt-free time to get their own work, appointments or shopping done.

*Early enrollment discount does not apply to workshops.

3rd Stage Production Class | K5-Grade 5

Tuesdays – I WALK WITH VANESSA | January 19-May 29 | 5:00-6:30 PM | Traysie Amick | $250
Thursdays – THE INVISIBLE BOY or GIRL | January 21-May 29 | 5:00-6:30 PM | Traysie Amick | $250

This class is by audition only and all spots have been filled.

3rd Stage is an opportunity for experienced younger actors to realize the hard work that goes into being “up there”. Stories are adapted for a fully produced weekend run. The age range allows elementary aged students to tackle character roles while younger actors create an ensemble experience. Tuition is due after casting is announced.  Students embark on the rehearsal process creating characters and making acting choices guided by the director, Traysie Amick. In addition, they will see young artists (3rd Stage Mentors) take on backstage and production roles, discover techniques and activities that are useful during “down-time” at rehearsal, and build a group of kindred partners with one objective: tell a great story!

Parents also have the opportunity to see how a child handles a heavier schedule. They become familiar with new theatre jargon and get an inside look at the demands and expectations of “tech rehearsals”. Everybody learns!
