Internships

Upstate college-age students with an interest in theatre will benefit in working in the midst of a multi-faceted theatre. Our internships are focused in the following areas: Theatre Education/Teaching, Production, Marketing, Theatre Administration and Outreach. All internship opportunities are unpaid and do not include housing benefits.

Candidates must have a keen sense of organization and attention to detail, be a self-starter who enjoys seeing a project through to its completion, and gain satisfaction from the growth and success of various types and ages of students. Successful interns will discover the value of a layered program, consisting of theatre classes (K-12 and adult), MainStage and touring South Carolina Children’s Theatre productions, additional 2nd Stage opportunities, Events and fundraising.

Our internship opportunities provide an opportunity for aspiring teachers and children’s theatre professionals to participate in an intense and growing theatre education program in the context of a thriving community theatre organization.

Teaching Internship

The Teaching Internship provides an opportunity for aspiring teachers and children’s theatre professionals to participate in an intense and growing theatre education program in the context of a thriving community theatre organization. Administrative and teaching responsibilities will afford the candidate an understanding of the complex interrelationships of each facet of SCCT’s Conservatory Program. The focus will be on assisting the Education Director and instructors in the execution of tasks necessary for the smooth running of each aspect of a theatre school – from building supervision to interaction with parents and students.

Dates:

  • Fall Semester: Mid-September to Late November (varies)
  • Winter Semester: Early January to Late February
  • Spring Semester: Early March to May
  • Summer Semester: Mid-June to Mid-August

Our Conservatory classes are broken into semesters: Fall, Winter, Spring and Summer. Interns typically work as an assistant for a weekly class for the duration of the semester (10-12 weeks). The intern selects classes based on his/her schedule and number of credit hours needed to fulfill the requirements if needed. CLASS ASSISTANT:

  • Assist Conservatory classes-which serve 2,000 students per year onsite. These are broken into semesters: Fall, Winter, Spring, and Summer.
  • Interns typically work as an assistant for a weekly class for the duration of the semester (10-12 weeks). The intern selects classes based on their schedule and # of hours needed to fulfill the requirements of the internship

Technical Theatre Internship

The Technical Theatre Internship provides an opportunity for aspiring actors and technical theatre professionals to participate in an intense and thriving community theatre organization. The focus will be on assisting a Mainstage Technical Director and Stage Manager in the execution of tasks necessary for the smooth running of rehearsal, tech and performance.

  • Technical Internships are designed for individuals interested in a “behind the scenes” approach to theater.
  • Interns may assist in any and all aspects of creating and maintaining sets, props, costumes, lighting, and audio.
  • Duties may include carpentry, metal work, load in/out, set strikes, sewing, rigging, painting, hanging and focusing lights, and assisting in the scene shop or the props and costumes shop.
  • Applicants may also have the opportunity to shadow designers, technicians, or stage managers at the Technical Director’s discretion.
  • General production responsibilities may be supplemented with concentrations in various areas based on interest and skill.
  • Available concentrations are: Stage Management, Costumes, Props, Lights, scenic painting, and technical theater. Previous experience in the requested concentration is not necessary, but may be preferred for specific projects.

Production Assistant Internship

  • Assist in any needed preparation for Mainstage or 2nd Stage productions including: help prepare rehearsal materials, serve as a production assistant during rehearsals, assist with the needed positions of the stage door, backstage and ushering as available, assist with load-in and load out, and help with set-building and painting in the shop.

Arts Administration/Marketing Internship

The Administration/Marketing Internship provides an opportunity for aspiring arts administration and/or marketing focused students to participate in an intense and growing non-profit in the context of a thriving community theatre organization. The Arts Administration will assist the Executive Director and Office Manager in the execution of tasks. The marketing and public relations responsibilities will focus on assisting the Marketing Director to actively promote the theatre’s offerings in the community through advertising, special events, press releases, and a strategic communication plan.

  • The marketing responsibilities will focus on assisting the South Carolina Children’s Theatre Marketing Director in the execution of tasks necessary for the smooth execution of each marketing plan – from social media content development to special event planning and preparation.
  • Assist in preparation and execution of marketing promotions
  • Develop and maintain relevant content across multiple channels
  • Help to organize marketing materials
  • Assist in distributing marketing materials to local partners within the community (i.e. schools, restaurants, retailers)
  • Lead special projects from start to finish
  • Help maintain professional media contacts and reach out/provide information to help promote SCCT.
  • Play a role in distribution of press releases and other marketing content.

Development Internship

The Development Internship provides an opportunity for aspiring arts administration and/or development focused students to participate in an intense and growing non-profit in the context of a thriving community theatre organization. The focus will be on assisting the Executive Director, Development Director and Office Manager in the execution of tasks necessary to secure donors and follow-up as needed.

Job Description:

  • The development responsibilities will focus on assisting the South Carolina Children’s Theatre Executive Director and Development staff in the execution of tasks necessary to secure donors and follow-up as needed.
  • Assist with database management and donor file management
  • Help coordinate and execute special events and donor recognition
  • Prepare and execute communications and various mailings to new and renewing individual donors
  • Assist with grant & donor research and administrative needs
