We only accept students into these classes who have at least one full year of process-based classes at SCCT (more than one year is preferred) and/or have been recommended by one of our teachers. All PRODUCTION-level students need to have the same foundational knowledge so that class time can be spent honing previously acquired skills. We will not have time to teach the terminology that should be working knowledge for a student at this level.
Before moving into a PRODUCTION level class, students should typically be able to name the parts of the stage, use abbreviations for stage directions and blocking notation, be able to define basic theatrical terms, understand CROoWw, be familiar with Lessac energies and Laban qualities as well as wanting to be given more responsibilities/homework and be willing to repeat material weekly for rehearsal and complete reading assignments in a week. There are expectations of behavior, focus, and attendance at the PRODUCTION level. Your current SCCT teacher is always the best reference for whether your child is ready to move up, and you should email them regarding your child’s progression if you have questions.
Please understand that PRODUCTION level classes are NOT appropriate for everyone–they require…
Family and friends are invited to a live performance showcase of all SCCT’s PRODUCTION classes. Students and parents will get to see what other classes are doing and record any part of the performances as desired. Be sure to mark the date on your calendar for the Production Showcase!
To prepare for the live performance, these classes run longer than most other classes. More time in class, more meetings per semester, more work outside of class, and most importantly, more accomplishments to share with the public!
Mon, Dec 1st – from 5-8pm. Please note this date on your calendar now!
The registration link will be sent to students who have been recommended for Production classes. If you would like your child to be considered for a class, please email education@scchildrenstheatre.org and include
There is no early enrollment discount for PRODUCTION classes, as the class cost per hour is already significantly lower than PROCESS classes. Limited class space available.
Building on foundation skills acquired in previous SCCT musical theatre classes or performances in upstate musicals, or dance classes and chorus, this class provides a chance to hone song & dance performance skills for kids committed to working independently. Students in this class should WANT to rehearse, be self-starting, and be eager to work at home to bring new ideas to class each week.
Group voice and dance classes in the early part of the
semester will provide skill-building, and then students will develop a medley of songs for a live performance! This will be a more complex performance crafted to individually feature vocalists and dancers, rather than the whole class singing solely as an ensemble and performing limited choreography.
Write Direct emphasizes writing and directing, guiding students from script development to a final performance. Students begin by exploring dramatic structures, character development, and storytelling techniques through creative writing exercises. They craft scripts, participate in feedback sessions to refine their work, and then shift focus to directing, learning blocking, staging, and character interpretation. The semester culminates in a public performance of their original play, providing a holistic theatre experience that nurtures creativity, collaboration, and communication skills.
Over a semester, students will explore the fundamentals of playwriting, directing, and acting, culminating in the creation and performance of an original short play. How did we make that play?! Students will explore writing, directing, and acting by working together to create a one-of-a-kind performance. What do you love most about theatre? Is it the magic of seeing the stories in your imagination come to life? Maybe you like putting the picture together as a whole? Perhaps it is becoming a character and discovering their world? Try on each hat- playwright, director, and actor- and see which one is the best fit for you. You won’t know until you try! If your child is “not an actor,” we can accommodate him/her in this class, and they can focus on the non-performance elements of the production while still gaining social and collaborative skills.
Moving up was never so fun! A little more work earns a lot more spotlight!
Building on foundational skills learned in SCCT Process classes, this course offers an opportunity to improve performance skills for kids committed to working independently. Students should WANT to rehearse, be self-motivated, and eager to work at home to bring new ideas to class each week. Vocal projection and articulation should come naturally—we will refine these skills, but the student should be prepared to speak clearly and be heard.
ONStage offers young actors the opportunity to experience a more professional rehearsal and production process. Designed in two formats for different age groups, ONStage offers advanced students the opportunity to build and perform a fully produced play with an ensemble.
The younger age group performs multiple times and learns about the tech process. The older age group learns about devising new plays with an ensemble and performs their original work once.
For those interested in behind-the-scenes work, older students can also apply for Mentorship roles to support younger ONStage performers and participate as tech crew.
