South Carolina Children’s Theatre has partnered with ArtsGrow SC and the South Carolina Arts Commission to create Literacy Kits that promote pandemic recovery and K-5 readiness skills using theatre education teaching tools. Each Literacy Kit includes a beloved children’s book, theatre props, art materials, instructions (available in English and Spanish), and more to bring each book’s story to life. These kits can offer the perfect addition to your existing story times and other programming.
We have Literacy Kits centered around the following beloved children’s books:
· Amy Wu and the Patchwork Dragon by Kat Zhang (available in English and Spanish)
· Nigel and the Moon by Antwan Eady (available in English and Spanish)
· Señorita Mariposa by Ben Gundersheimer (available in English and Spanish)
· Thank You, Omu! by Oge Mora (available in English and Spanish)
· The Color Monster by Anna Llenas (available in English and Spanish)
· Leonardo, the Terrible Monster by Mo Willems
· Last Stop on Market Street by Matt de la Peña (available in English and Spanish)
· Dumplings for Lili by Melissa Iwai (available in English and Spanish)
· Go Dog Go! by P.D. Eastman
· The Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats (available in English and Spanish)
These kits will be available in multiple regions of the State. This program is FREE for all educators in South Carolina, and we would be thrilled to drop off a Literacy Kit (or multiple kits) at your location or coordinate a pickup with one of our partners. We are also happy to provide in-person or virtual training on how to use the kits for those interested before the end of the school year. Please email Mia Hartley-Phillips at mia@scchildrenstheatre.org to coordinate your delivery and/or training!
We hope you enjoyed using our Literacy Kits. Please take a few minutes to complete a survey and tell us about your experience!
