Write Direct

Explore the fundamentals of creating an original short play

Write Direct emphasizes writing and directing, guiding students from script development to a final performance. Students begin by exploring dramatic structures, character development, and storytelling techniques through creative writing exercises. They craft scripts, participate in feedback sessions to refine their work, and then shift focus to directing, learning blocking, staging, and character interpretation. The semester culminates in a public performance of their original play, providing a holistic theatre experience that nurtures creativity, collaboration, and communication skills.

Over the course of a semester, students will explore the fundamentals of playwriting, directing, and acting, culminating in the creation and performance of an original short play. The class will work on material for a live performance for family & friends on Monday, December 1st.

  • The class begins by exploring different dramatic structures, character development, and storytelling techniques. Students learn about the elements that make a compelling script.
  • Students engage in various writing exercises to stimulate creativity and develop their own unique voices. They experiment with dialogue, monologues, and scenes.
  • As students progress, they start working on their scripts. The class emphasizes feedback sessions, where peers and the instructor provide constructive criticism to help refine and improve each script.
  • Once scripts are complete, students shift their focus to directing. They learn about blocking, staging, and interpreting a script for performance.
  • The class delves into various acting techniques, primarily Stanislavski, to develop a toolbox of skills to bring their characters to life. Actors collaborate to understand the motivations and nuances of their characters.
  • The class enters a comprehensive rehearsal phase, during which students work collaboratively to bring the play to life. This includes refining dialogue, blocking, and ensuring a cohesive performance.
  • The semester culminates in a public performance of the original short play.
  • A drama class nurtures artistic skills and teaches valuable life skills such as teamwork, communication, and problem-solving. It provides students with a holistic understanding of theatre, from the conception of an idea to its realization on stage.
