Based on the book “The Watsons Go to Birmingham – 1963” by Christopher Paul Curtis

With younger brother Kenny’s birthday coming in just a few days, the Watson family makes a road trip to visit Grandma to get older brother Byron on the straight and narrow. But their plans go awry, and both brothers are forced to grow up quickly. Based on the book “The Watsons Go to Birmingham – 1963” by Christopher Paul Curtis, this small ensemble play imagines the effects the 16th Street Baptist Church Bombing might have on a family visiting Birmingham that fateful Sunday. The event plays a pivotal role in bringing the Watson family together to face the monsters in the dark – both real and imagined.

“Christopher Paul Curtis’ book, The Watsons Go to Birmingham – 1963, is beautifully adapted here by Cheryl West. I remember reading this book as a child in school, and its humor and powerful message impacted me greatly. This story reminds us how, in the midst of great darkness, those close to us can help us find light.”
